The light could have been white on the crossing sign.

The man and the hand.
The man is white, the hand is orange.
Hand = halt.
Man = walk.
Halt and walk.

Since he was waiting, then he would have been staring at the hand, the orange.
He was waiting on the hand to change.

There is at least one source that says Eric died while clinging to a parking meter.

" He died from a heart attack while walking down the street to a luncheon held in his honor. A young woman who was a passer-by, saw Sloane go into cardiac arrest as he held onto a parking meter before collapsing to the sidewalk..."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Sloane

The irony here would be that Eric had a "deep personal superstition that ignoring time itself might be a secret technique to delay aging." (page 7, TTOTC).

So, "he died while walking" works well with the 'man'.

But, since he was 'waiting' ...

Waiting on the 'hand' to change seems to fit better than waiting on the 'man' to change, since hands are associated with clocks.

So yes, the light would have been red.

The light going the other direction was green. So either way we have red, yellow, green, white, and orange lights. Nobody is paying attention to the guy trying to buy more time... especially in Texas.

You don't have red yellow and green all at the same time.

Halt and walk are in the poem.

Changing hands is in the poem ... "If you... I give you ...".
The title to the gold changes hands.

Figure that one out, and it describes another clue in the poem.

I thought you might enjoy this one, from 2003, New Yorker: The Man and the Hand
