To an ant . . .
. . . a mud puddle can seem like an ocean, right?

Might the phrase "tarry scant" be "meant to be spoken" to mean something related to "ta risk ant", or (more formally, perhaps) "to risk ant"?

If so, then the implication may be that the ant would be crossing a mud puddle.

Although I don't think this was FF's primary intended meaning of "tarry
scant", I still believe that mud is involved in a successful search for the TC.

RE: To an ant . . .
On my last search trip, I took one step from a rock into a muddy marsh.
It grabbed my boot with such tenacity that when I lifted my leg, the boot
(a tall one with a long, strong lace) almost came off. I suggest searchers
don't under-estimate any mud, marsh, or fen. I also strongly suggest that
one should not hike "alone", regardless of polarity.
