Then you have to ask what was the point of the "people have been within 500 feet" comment - because they all would have been within 300'ish feet when driving by on road.

With respect to the Falls, like others have said... that looks like a helluva hike down. The hike around the backside along the cliffs can be tied into Catcher in the Rye though it looks like?

Yeah, the area by the roadside is a straight shot down off a cliff. If you take the trail to your right, it's still steep but you can get to that cool grassy area.

It's easy to die in Yellowstone if you're stupid.
